Maito vs Devin

Devin is the best-known AI software engineer. Is it the same as Maito? And who on your team can use it?

Dmitry Dubovetzky

Is Devin the same as Maito?

No. Devin is an engineering product built around developers, with cloud sessions, a desktop app, a CLI, code review, and automations. Maito is one AI teammate for the whole company that does both product engineering and business work in shared threads.

The overlap is real: both start coding work from Slack, test in a browser, record what they did, open pull requests, and run scheduled work. The difference is who the product is organized around. Devin's seats, memory, and tools center on developers. Maito's single workspace lets support, product, sales, and engineering work with the same agent, and it costs $149 per workspace per month, plus your AI provider's usage and any cloud credits beyond the included $20.

What is Devin?

Devin is Cognition's AI software engineer: cloud coding sessions, a local desktop app and CLI, code review, a data analyst mode, and automations, reachable from Slack, Linear, GitHub, and its web app.

In Slack, every user links their Slack profile to a Devin account by matching email. A mention starts a session, follow-ups continue in the thread or a dedicated code channel, and quick codebase questions get answered without a full session.

Devin can start your app, test it in a browser, and attach a processed video of the test to its result. Its data analyst mode queries connected databases and builds charts, and its official MCP server lets other AI tools start and manage Devin sessions.

And what is Maito?

Maito is an AI teammate your whole company shares, in Slack and in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Grok, and Muse.

Anyone in an invited Slack channel can ask it for work, without a seat or a linked account. Teammates join the thread, add context, and pick up where someone else stopped. It does features, bug fixes, refactors, code review, QA, and tests, each in its own sandbox with your checks and a pull request, and business work such as research, reports, and follow-ups in your connected tools.

How do Maito and Devin compare at a glance?

Both take coding work from Slack to a tested pull request and run automations. Maito is organized around the whole company, with shared company knowledge and no seats. Devin is organized around developers, with seats, personal memory, and a desktop and CLI.

Who on your team can work with Maito and Devin?

Anyone in an invited Slack channel can work with Maito, without an account. Devin needs each Slack user linked to a Devin account, with a full seat for daily developers or a flex seat for occasional users.

Flex seats have no recurring seat fee and draw on the team's shared on-demand credit, without Desktop access. That makes it possible for support or product people to use Devin occasionally.

In Maito, nobody needs a seat. A support lead, a product manager, and an engineer can all reply in the same thread, and DMs stay private to whoever linked their account for them.

What does Devin remember, and what does Maito remember?

Devin keeps personal memory for each user, which teammates don't share, plus shared skills for team procedures. Maito keeps company knowledge that the whole workspace shares, plus personal memory for each person.

Devin stores each user's preferences, corrections, and lessons as Markdown notes in a Git repository, and a process it calls Dreaming organizes them. Automated sessions don't read or write that memory. Shared conventions belong in Skills, which replaced Devin's older Knowledge feature.

Maito learns facts from shared threads, such as a pricing rule or how a feature behaves, and saves good results as skills anyone can reuse. Each person's role and preferences live in their own personal memory.

And what do Maito and Devin do when a customer reports a bug?

Both can reproduce a bug in the browser, record it, fix it, and open a pull request. Maito also brings the support side into the same thread: the ticket, the evidence from your tools, and a reply drafted for the customer.

@Maito a customer on Safari can't drag cards between columns on the board view. Ticket #3307.

MaitoAPP2:31 PM

Reproduced on Safari 18. Video attached: the drop event never fires because the drag image is set after the drag starts. PR #841 sets it on dragstart and adds a Safari test. Checks pass, and QA passed on the preview.

Can you also check Firefox before we merge?

MaitoAPP2:44 PM

Firefox passes too, recording added to the PR. The customer reply is drafted below with a workaround until the release.

What do Maito and Devin do with a business task?

Maito does business work across your connected tools with what it knows about your company. Devin's business work centers on its data analyst mode, which queries connected databases and builds charts.

@Maito our quarterly pricing review is Friday. Which discount codes are still active, who created them, and how much revenue used them last quarter?

MaitoAPP9:52 AM

11 codes are active. Four were created for events that ended in the spring, and they drove $18,300 last quarter. Table with owners and revenue is in the thread. Want me to draft a note to each owner asking whether to expire theirs?

Can Maito and Devin both run work every week?

Yes. Devin runs automations from schedules and events, and Maito runs recurring work as Loops.

Devin's automations combine a trigger, conditions, an optional script check, and actions, from sources such as Slack, GitHub, GitLab, Linear, Jira, Pylon, PagerDuty, and webhooks. On Teams, automations draw from shared on-demand credit, and they stop when that credit runs out.

Maito's Loops run on a schedule, from a webhook, or when you start them, for coding and business work alike.

When is Devin enough?

Devin is enough when the people asking for AI help are mostly developers, and they want a desktop app, a CLI, and code review alongside the Slack work.

Can we use Maito and Devin together?

Yes. Developers can keep Devin in their editor and terminal while the rest of the company works with Maito in Slack and its AI assistants.

So should you choose Maito or Devin?

Choose Maito for one AI teammate the whole company shares, with company knowledge and no seats, for product and business work. Choose Devin if your developers want a full engineering toolset with a desktop app, a CLI, and code review.

Choose Maito if…

  • Support, product, and sales should ask without a seat
  • Company knowledge should be shared, not personal
  • Customer bugs should go from ticket to reply in one thread
  • You want to choose the AI provider and see its bill

Choose Devin if…

  • The work is mostly software, for developers
  • Engineers want a desktop app, a CLI, and code review
  • You already pay for Devin seats

Pick one customer ticket that needs a code change and ask a support teammate to start it in each product. Compare who could start it, what came back, and how many handoffs it took.
