ChatGPT vs Claude vs Slackbot
Claude in Slack, ChatGPT in Slack, or Slackbot AI: which should your team use?
Which is better in Slack: ChatGPT, Claude, or Slackbot?
Slackbot is the better pick for personal answers if your company is on Slack Business+ or Enterprise+. Claude in Slack, through Claude Tag, is the better pick for a shared agent that remembers each channel and takes on real work. ChatGPT in Slack is the better pick if your company already pays for ChatGPT Business and wants quick drafts and Codex tasks in a thread.
Pick Slackbot for
- Finding something in your own Slack history
- Nothing extra to buy on Business+
Pick Claude for
- One agent the whole channel steers together
- Memory that carries from one request to the next
- Spend limits per channel
Pick ChatGPT for
- A company that already lives in ChatGPT
- The same assistant in Microsoft Teams
All three answer when you ask in Slack, but they work for different people. Slackbot works for you: it reads what you can see and nobody else is in the conversation. Claude Tag works for the channel: one Claude, its own tool accounts, and notes that build up over time. @ChatGPT works for whoever mentions it in an enabled channel, using the tools an admin approved. We checked Slack's, Anthropic's, and OpenAI's help pages and pricing in October 2026.
What can you do with Slackbot in Slack?
Slackbot is the AI agent built into Slack. It searches the conversations, files, and connected apps you have access to, summarizes threads and meetings, drafts documents, and runs deep research that takes up to ten minutes. How to work with Slackbot.
You open it from the top right of Slack on desktop, or from the Home tab on mobile. It shows the steps it's taking, and you can stop it midway. Recurring tasks run on a schedule, saved skills hold step-by-step instructions, and edits to a shared canvas wait for you to confirm. Slackbot connects to other apps through MCP and can bring in other agents, including Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor.
Where Slackbot is strong:
- It's already in Slack, with nothing to install or approve
- It never shows anyone a message they couldn't open themselves
- It reads Salesforce records within each person's permissions

What does Claude do in Slack?
In Slack, Claude means Claude Tag: you tag @Claude in a channel, DM it, or open it from the AI assistant panel, and it works with your organization's tools under its own identity. Claude Tag replaced the earlier Claude in Slack app on August 3, 2026. What is Claude Tag.
Everyone in a channel works with the same Claude, so a second person can change direction halfway through. It keeps memory per channel and per workspace, opens pull requests through the Claude GitHub App, and checks back on its own when a job finishes or a thread stalls.
There are two more ways to connect Claude and Slack. The Slack connector lets Claude search your channels, DMs, and files from a claude.ai chat, on Team and Enterprise plans. Developers can also give Claude Code or another AI client Slack's MCP server, which searches channels, sends messages, and manages canvases.
Where Claude Tag is strong:
- One Claude per channel, with notes that carry into the next request
- Its own accounts in your tools, so its actions show up under its name in audit logs
- An organization spend cap, per-channel limits, and alerts at 75% and 90%

What does ChatGPT do in Slack?
You mention @ChatGPT in an enabled channel or DM it, and it summarizes the discussion, drafts replies, works with admin-approved tools, and sends repository work to Codex Cloud. It's for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces. ChatGPT in Slack, OpenAI help center.
Connections run under a company account, not the person asking, so @ChatGPT doesn't see your private files or channels. At launch, it has no memory and doesn't use anyone's ChatGPT memories.
Going the other direction, the ChatGPT Slack app (formerly the Slack connector) lets ChatGPT search Slack messages you can already open, from inside ChatGPT, on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. Plus and Pro users in the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland can't use it.
Where ChatGPT in Slack is strong:
- It comes with the ChatGPT Business seats many companies already buy
- The same app works in Microsoft Teams
- Coding requests run as Codex Cloud tasks and post back to the thread

How do you set up and use Claude in Slack?
A Claude organization Owner starts setup at claude.ai/admin-settings/claude-tag, a Slack workspace admin installs the Claude app and runs @Claude connect, and the Owner pastes the pairing code within 15 minutes. After launch, people tag @Claude in any channel it has joined.
The steps, in order:
- Turn on Routines under Admin settings > Capabilities in claude.ai. Without it, Claude replies that it's unavailable.
- In Slack, a workspace admin adds the Claude app from the Slack Marketplace, runs
/invite @Claudein a channel, then sends@Claude connectwith no other text. - The Owner pastes the pairing code on the setup page and clicks Pair workspace.
- Connect GitHub if Claude will touch code, and on a Team plan, buy usage credits. Nothing runs without them.
- Pick at least one public channel, set a monthly spend limit, and click Launch Claude Tag.
- Give Claude its own email address and an account in each tool it needs, then add each key as a connector.

How do you add ChatGPT to Slack?
A ChatGPT workspace admin connects Slack from the OpenAI admin console, a Slack owner approves the app, and the admin chooses channels and connections. Then anyone in an enabled channel mentions @ChatGPT.
- In the OpenAI admin console, open Agents and connect Slack. A Slack owner or app manager approves the permissions.
- Create one surface per Slack workspace and choose Selected channels only for a pilot.
- Add the plugins and connections @ChatGPT can use. They run under a company account.
- For code, publish a Codex Cloud environment shared with the workspace.
- Test with a request in an approved channel and in a DM.

How do you turn on Slackbot's AI?
On Business+ and Enterprise+, Slackbot is already on for every member. Click Slackbot at the top right of Slack, or at the top of your sidebar, and type or dictate a request. Admins can limit who uses it, and guests can't.
For recurring work, open the Tasks tab and set a schedule. For a longer question, choose deep research from the plus button next to the message field. To share a good prompt, forward the message as a prompt, and the person gets their own Slackbot conversation to start from.

Can a whole channel work with ChatGPT, Claude, or Slackbot on the same request?
Claude Tag is the only one of the three built for it: everyone in the channel directs the same Claude, and it keeps notes for that channel. @ChatGPT replies in the thread, but each coding task runs as the person who asked. Slackbot conversations are private to each person.

@Claude pull last quarter's webinar signups by source and draft the recap for the board deck.
Signups by source are in the thread. Paid social brought 41% of signups but 12% of attendees. Draft recap below.
@Claude leave out the partner webinar, it was co-hosted and their list skews it.
Updated without the partner webinar. Paid social is now 46% of signups.
Winner: Claude. A second person can steer the work without starting over.
Which one writes code from Slack: ChatGPT, Claude, or Slackbot?
@ChatGPT sends repository work to a separate Codex Cloud task and posts the result back. Claude Tag commits and opens pull requests as the Claude GitHub App, linking back to the Slack thread. Slackbot isn't a coding agent; it brings in agents like Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor instead.
Codex tasks run under the requester's account, so both that account and the company account need Codex Cloud access where role-based access is on. Claude Tag's code work needs a GitHub organization owner to install the Claude GitHub App and grant repositories.
Winner: ChatGPT for teams whose engineers already use Codex; Claude when the whole channel should follow and steer the change.

Which one remembers your company: ChatGPT, Claude, or Slackbot?
Claude Tag keeps memory per channel and per workspace, and Owners can view, edit, and delete it. @ChatGPT has no memory at launch. Slackbot answers from whatever you can open in Slack and connected apps each time you ask.
Claude Tag's private channels keep their own notes and still read shared workspace context.
Winner: Claude. It's the only one that learns from the channel instead of rereading it.

Can ChatGPT, Claude, or Slackbot run work on a schedule?
All three can. Slackbot tasks run on a schedule, a set number of times, or until a date, up to three runs a day. Claude Tag sets its own follow-ups and lists them on an Activity page. ChatGPT team tasks run in the cloud on a schedule or an app event.
Ask "@Claude what triggers do you have set up here?" in any channel to see or turn off Claude's standing work. ChatGPT team task runs use workspace credits, and admins decide who can create them.

What do ChatGPT, Claude, and Slackbot cost in Slack?
As of October 2026, Slackbot comes with Slack Business+ at $18 per user per month, or $15 annually. @ChatGPT comes with ChatGPT Business at $25 per user monthly, or $20 annually. Claude Tag needs Claude Team at $25 per seat monthly, or $20 annually, and channel work bills to the organization on top.

Claude Tag is different: people in a channel ask without a Claude seat, so the bill is the Team plan your Claude users need plus channel usage. Winner: Slackbot, if your company is already on Business+. It costs nothing more.

What can't ChatGPT, Claude, or Slackbot do in Slack?
Each one is tied to its vendor: Slackbot lives inside Slack, Claude Tag runs only Claude models, and @ChatGPT runs only OpenAI's. Each also has gaps you'll hit in the first week.
- Slackbot works for one person at a time, isn't a coding agent, and stops at 15 messages a week per person on Business+. Guests can't use it.
- Claude Tag needs a Claude Owner and a Slack admin online together to pair, won't run until Team plans load credits, and isn't available to organizations with Zero Data Retention.
- @ChatGPT forgets between requests, can't work in channels shared with another organization, and needs an admin to approve every tool it uses.
So should your team use ChatGPT, Claude, or Slackbot in Slack?
Use Slackbot if your company is on Business+ and people mostly need to find, summarize, and draft. Use Claude Tag if you're on Claude Team or Enterprise and want one agent each channel can steer. Use ChatGPT in Slack if your company already pays for ChatGPT Business and wants Codex in the thread.
Two of them can sit side by side: Slackbot for each person's own questions, and Claude Tag or @ChatGPT for shared work in channels. Try the same request in each, then ask a follow-up a week later and see which one still knows what you meant.
Is there an AI employee that works in Slack and email with the provider you choose?
Yes. Maito is an AI employee your whole company tags in Slack, emails at its own workspace address, and reaches from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Grok, and Muse. It runs on the AI provider you pick, including OpenAI with a ChatGPT subscription or Anthropic with an API key, for $149 per workspace per month plus that provider's usage.

@Maito Halden's ops lead just emailed you their volume forecast. Does it change the pricing tier we quoted?
Yes. Their forecast is 140,000 orders a month, which moves them from Growth to Scale. That's $0.04 per order instead of $0.06. I drafted a reply to their ops lead with the new quote and copied you. Send it, or should Dario check the margin first?
Anyone in an invited channel can ask without a Maito account, and teammates can step into the same thread. Maito remembers what the company teaches it, runs recurring work as Loops, and takes on code changes in its own sandbox with your checks and a pull request. There's no free plan.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Slackbot in Slack: frequently asked questions
How do I use Claude in Slack?
Tag @Claude in a channel it has joined, DM @Claude, or click the Claude icon in Slack's AI assistant header. Your company needs Claude Team or Enterprise, and a Claude Owner has to set up Claude Tag first.
Can Claude read my Slack messages?
Yes, with the Slack connector in claude.ai on Team and Enterprise plans. Claude searches the channels, DMs, and files you can access and answers from them. An Owner enables it, then each person connects their account.
Is ChatGPT in Slack free?
No. @ChatGPT is for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces. As of October 2026, Business costs $25 per user per month, or $20 billed annually, with a two-user minimum.
Can ChatGPT integrate with Slack?
Yes, in two directions. On Business, Enterprise, and Edu, people mention @ChatGPT in Slack channels. On Plus, Pro, and business plans, the ChatGPT Slack app searches the Slack messages you can already open from inside ChatGPT.
Is Slackbot AI free?
No. Slackbot comes with Business+ and Enterprise+. Free and Pro plans get a one-time preview that doesn't reset unless you upgrade.
How many messages can I send to Slackbot?
On Business+, 15 a week, resetting at midnight Monday in your time zone. Enterprise+ has no weekly or lifetime cap, and Flex Credits pay for more.
Can we use ChatGPT and Claude in the same Slack workspace?
Yes. They're separate apps with separate admins and bills. Enable each in different channels so a request doesn't go to both.
What's the difference between a Slack app and a Slack bot?
A Slack app is what gets installed in your workspace, and its bot is the identity the app acts as, with permissions separate from any person's. You add the bot to a channel and @mention it. Claude Tag and @ChatGPT are apps with bots; Slackbot is built into Slack and needs no install.
