Maito vs Claude Tag
Anthropic turned Claude in Slack into Claude Tag. Is it the same as Maito? And what if your team doesn't only use Claude?
Which is better, Maito or Claude Tag?
Maito is the better pick if you want to choose the model, reach the same teammate outside Slack, and pay one workspace price. Claude Tag is the better pick if your company already runs on Claude Team or Enterprise and all the work happens in Slack.
Pick Maito for
- Choose the AI provider and model for each kind of work
- Reach the same teammate by email, ChatGPT, or Cursor
- Each coding task in its own sandbox with QA
Pick Claude Tag for
- A company already standardized on Claude
- SOC 2 Type II, ISO 42001, and a HIPAA option
- Spending caps per channel
Claude Tag is Anthropic's AI teammate in Slack, running only on Claude and billed to your Claude organization by usage. Maito is a teammate for code and business work that everyone in the company shares, on whichever provider you pick. As of October 2026, Claude Tag needs a Claude Team plan from $25 per seat a month plus usage; Maito is $149 per workspace plus your provider's usage.
This guide is for a Slack-first company already paying for Claude and wondering whether it needs anything else. We rechecked Anthropic's help center and pricing in October 2026.
What is Claude Tag?
Claude Tag is Anthropic's way to give Claude work inside Slack, in beta on Claude Team and Enterprise plans since it replaced Claude in Slack on August 3, 2026.
You tag @Claude in a channel, DM it, or open the assistant panel. Everyone in a channel works with the same Claude, so anyone can steer it or pick up its work. It keeps memory per channel and per workspace, opens pull requests through the Claude GitHub App, and schedules its own follow-ups.
Where Claude Tag is strong:
- It comes with a Claude plan many companies already pay for
- Admins set an organization cap, per-channel limits, and spending alerts
- Anthropic holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and ISO 42001

And what is Maito?
Maito is a shared AI teammate that isn't tied to one AI vendor: it runs on the provider you choose and works in Slack, by email, and in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Grok, and Muse.
Anyone in an invited Slack channel can ask it for work, without a Maito account or a Claude seat, and others can join the thread to steer it. Contract reviews, account research, and weekly reports run through your connected tools. For code, it's the agent the whole company shares: each task gets its own sandbox, your checks, browser QA, and a pull request.

Which AI models can Maito and Claude Tag use?
Claude Tag runs on Claude. Maito runs on the AI provider and model you choose, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, GitHub Copilot, xAI, or OpenRouter.
You can pick one model for everyday work and a different provider and model for coding tasks. If your team already pays for ChatGPT, Copilot, or an Anthropic API account, Maito uses it.
Winner: Maito. You aren't locked to one vendor's models or prices, and you can switch when a better model ships.

Where can your team work with Maito and Claude Tag?
Claude Tag works in Slack. Maito works in Slack, by email, and in the AI assistants your team already uses: Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Grok, and Muse.
Someone who lives in ChatGPT, an engineer in Cursor, a support lead in Slack, and an operations manager by email all reach the same Maito, with the same company knowledge. Claude Tag's DMs bill to each person's own Claude account, while channel work bills to the organization.
Winner: Maito. People who don't live in Slack reach the same teammate.

@Maito Northstar sent back our MSA with edits. Compare it with our standard terms and flag anything outside our fallback positions.
Seven changes. Five are within our fallbacks. Two aren't: liability capped at 6 months of fees, where our floor is 12, and a 15-day payment term, where ours is 30. Redline with comments is in Drive, and a short reply to their counsel is drafted in the thread.
Winner: Maito, for picking the model per kind of work and sending the reply by email from the same thread.
And what do Maito and Claude Tag do when a customer reports a bug?
Claude Tag works on the bug in a shared session and opens a pull request as the Claude GitHub App. Maito runs each fix in its own sandbox with your checks and a browser recording, and drafts the customer reply in the same thread.
Illustrative conversation, not a recorded product test.
@Maito a customer says the search box returns nothing when they type an accented name like "José". Ticket #8150.
Reproduced. Search lowercases the query but doesn't strip accents, while the index does, so "José" never matches. Recording attached. PR #1104 normalizes accents on both sides and adds tests for Spanish, French, and German names. Checks pass. Reply to the customer is drafted below.
Each Maito coding task runs in its own sandbox, branch, and checkout, so several can run at once without touching the same files.
Winner: Maito. Browser QA, a recording, and the customer reply come with every fix.

Do Maito and Claude Tag both remember your company?
Yes. Claude Tag remembers per channel and per workspace, and Owners can view, edit, and delete that memory. Maito learns company facts and skills from shared work, and that knowledge follows it into email and AI assistants.
Maito's private conversations stay private, and anyone can ask it to remember, correct, or forget a fact. Good results become skills the team reuses.
Winner: Maito. What it learns in Slack is there when someone asks from ChatGPT or by email.

Can Maito and Claude Tag run work every week?
Yes. Claude Tag schedules its own follow-ups, such as posting when a job finishes, and lists them on an Activity page. Maito Loops start on a timer, from a message in Slack or its inbox, or when another system calls their webhook.
Maito Loops cover a nightly check of failed payments or a webhook from your CRM when a deal closes, and anyone on the team can pause or change them.
Winner: Maito. Outside systems can start the work, not only Claude's own follow-ups.

Claude Tag blocks guest channels by default and deletes its conversations within 30 days of disconnecting.

What would ten people pay for a month of Maito or Claude Tag?
As of October 2026, ten Claude Team Standard seats cost $250 a month billed monthly, plus channel usage. Maito is $149 for the workspace, and the models bill to whichever provider you connect, Anthropic included.
Maito
$149 per month + provider usage
- One workspace, unlimited people
- $20 in included credits for coding sandboxes and web search
- Your AI provider bills its usage at its own rates
Claude Tag
$250 per month for ten seats + usage
- 10 × $25 Claude Team Standard seats, billed monthly
- Channel work is billed to your organization by usage
- Spending caps per organization and per channel
Admins decide whether people need a Claude seat to use Claude Tag in a channel. A company already paying for Claude seats adds only the usage; a company that isn't adds the plan too.

When is Claude Tag enough?
Claude Tag is enough when your company is already on a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, works only in Slack, and wants to use only Claude.
Can we use Maito and Claude Tag together?
Yes. Maito can run on Anthropic's models, so a company can keep Claude Tag in some channels and use Maito for work that reaches email, other AI assistants, or a different model.
Invite each to the channels where it fits, so the same request doesn't go to both.
What carries over when a team adds Maito next to Claude Tag?
Claude Tag's channel and workspace notes carry over as text. Maito can run on the same Claude models, so the answers stay familiar.
Copy the workspace notes into a Maito thread and ask it to propose company memories; you confirm each before it's shared. Leave channel notes from private channels out unless their owners agree.
Claude Tag's scheduled follow-ups become Loops in Maito. Reconnect the tools each one uses, run it once by hand, and cancel the Claude follow-up so the channel doesn't hear it twice.
