Maito vs Dust

Dust lets every team build its own AI agents. Is that the same as an AI teammate like Maito? And what does each cost per person?

Dmitry Dubovetzky

Which is better, Maito or Dust?

Maito is the better pick if you'd rather share one teammate than design and maintain a catalog of agents, and if product bugs should end in a tested pull request. Dust is the better pick if each department wants its own specialized agents under central governance.

Pick Maito for

  • One teammate, nothing to build first
  • Support questions that end in a code fix
  • One price however many people ask

Pick Dust for

  • Specialized agents for each department
  • SOC 2 Type II, SSO, and EU data residency
  • Starting free with a free seat

Dust is a platform where teams build, share, and run many specialized agents, with an admin model for company AI and pricing per seat. Maito is one ready AI teammate the whole company works with, for code and business work. As of October 2026, Dust prices each Pro seat at €30 a month; Maito prices the whole workspace at $149, with model usage on your own provider.

This guide is for a company choosing between one shared teammate and a catalog of department agents. We rechecked Dust's docs and pricing in October 2026.

What is Dust?

Dust is a platform for building agents from company knowledge, tools, models, and skills, and running them in a shared workspace and in Slack.

Teams build agents for work such as ticket triage, account research, analytics, and CRM updates, with more than 20 models and more than 70 connectors. Pods hold shared conversations, tasks, files, and artifacts, and admins control data and agent permissions, spending, and audit logs.

Its Computer tool gives agents a temporary workspace to run code, analyze data, and edit spreadsheets, slides, and documents.

Where Dust is strong:

  • Many specialized agents, each built and governed for one department's job
  • More than 20 models and 70 connectors
  • SOC 2 Type II, SSO on Business, and US or EU data residency

And what is Maito?

Maito is one AI teammate your company names and shares, ready to work once your tools are connected, in Slack, by email, and in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Grok, and Muse.

Nobody designs an agent for each job. Anyone in an invited channel asks, the team joins the thread, and good results become skills and Loops. It's also the coding agent everyone shares, with each task in its own sandbox, your checks, and a pull request.

How do Maito and Dust compare at a glance?

Dust gives teams the tools to build and govern many agents. Maito gives the company one teammate that's ready for business work and product changes, at one workspace price.

Do you have to build agents with Dust?

Yes. In Dust, someone configures an agent's knowledge, tools, model, and skills; the team can then reuse that agent across requests. In Maito, one teammate takes the work as people ask for it.

That's Dust's strength for a company that wants many specialized agents under central governance, and work for one that doesn't have someone to maintain them.

Winner: Maito, for teams that want answers before anyone designs an agent.

Does Dust's Slack bot work the same way as Maito?

Not exactly. Dust's Slack bot, its Slack data connection, and its Slack action tools are three separate things to set up. Maito joins Slack as one teammate that anyone in an invited channel can mention.

In Dust, people mention an agent in a channel or a DM, and a channel can have a default agent or reply automatically. Connecting Slack as a data source doesn't install the bot.

Winner: Maito. One install, one name to mention, and the same teammate by email and in AI assistants.

What do Maito and Dust do with a business task?

Maito does business tasks in Slack with your tools and what it knows about your company. In Dust, the agent a team built for that job does it.

@Maito how many tickets this month were about the mobile app login, and are they getting faster or slower to resolve?

Maito APP 1:18 PM

212 tickets, up from 140 last month. Median resolution went from 3 hours to 9, mostly because 80 of them waited for an engineer. Most are the same error after the 4.2 update. Want me to look at the login code next?

Example complete

Winner: even when Dust already has an agent for the job. Maito, when nobody built one yet.

And what do Maito and Dust do when a customer reports a bug?

Dust agents can run code, create GitHub issues, and review pull requests. Maito takes the bug from the report through a fix in your repository, with tests, QA, a pull request, and the customer reply.

Yes, please.

Maito APP 1:47 PM

The 4.2 app sends the login token before the clock sync finishes, so phones with a skewed clock get rejected. Recording from the emulator attached. PR #577 waits for the sync and adds a test with a five-minute skew. Checks pass. I drafted a reply for the 212 tickets with a workaround until the app update ships.

Winner: Maito. The same thread goes from a ticket count to a fix ready to merge and a reply.

Do Maito and Dust both remember your company?

Dust shares company data, Pod conversations, and skills, while its Agent Memory tool is private to each user and agent. Maito learns company facts from shared threads for everyone and keeps personal memory for each person.

Maito remembers things like a pricing rule or how a feature behaves, and uses them in later conversations, code and business alike. Private conversations don't teach the company unless someone asks to share a fact.

Winner: Maito. What one person teaches it, everyone benefits from.

Can Maito and Dust run work every week?

Yes. Dust agents run on schedules and webhooks. Maito runs Loops on a schedule, from a webhook, or when a Slack message or email asks for them.

Winner: even. Both cover schedules and outside triggers; Maito's runs bill to your provider instead of seat credits.

Maito encrypts credentials, keeps an admin-exportable log of agent actions, and runs models on your own provider account.

Winner: Dust, for companies that need SSO, EU hosting, or a SOC 2 report.

What would ten people pay for a month of Maito or Dust?

As of October 2026, ten Dust Pro seats cost €300 a month on monthly billing, with 80,000 credits. Maito is $149 for the whole workspace, with model usage on your own provider account.

Maito

$149 per month + provider usage

  • One workspace, unlimited people
  • $20 in included credits for coding sandboxes and web search
  • Your AI provider bills model usage separately

Dust Pro

€300 per month for ten seats

  • 10 × €30, with 8,000 credits per seat
  • Monthly credits don't roll over
  • Overage with a cap once an admin turns it on

Dust grows by one seat for every person who uses it. Maito's price stays the same as more people ask, and the model bill follows the work.

When is Dust enough?

Dust is enough when your teams want to build and govern many specialized agents themselves, and code work stops at analysis, issues, and pull request reviews.

Can a team use Maito and Dust together?

Yes. Departments can keep the Dust agents they built for narrow jobs while everyone asks Maito for the work that doesn't fit one of them, including product fixes.

What moves over when a team goes from Dust to Maito?

Each Dust agent's instructions and skills carry over as text, and your connected documents stay in the tools they came from. Connections and Slack setup are done again in Maito.

Paste the instructions of the agents your team actually uses into a Maito thread and ask it to save them as skills. Point Maito at the same document sources and ask it to propose the key facts as company memories for you to confirm. Agent memory in Dust is private to each person, so leave it with them.

Scheduled agents become Loops. Run each once by hand and pause the Dust schedule before the first run, so the channel doesn't get two briefs.
