How do you write IT how-to guides?

To write IT how-to guides, point Maito at a solved ticket and your docs tool. It reads the ticket and linked ones, writes a short step-by-step guide, and saves it as an unpublished draft. It also flags where tickets differ, like a fix that applies to one floor, so the guide stays accurate.

How it's done today

The same fix is explained again and again.

What Maito does

  1. Read the ticket
  2. Write the steps as a guide

@Maito turn ticket ITS-1873 into a guide.

Maito APP 4:03 PM

Drafted "Printer shows offline on Mac" in Notion under IT Guides. It's unpublished. I used ITS-1873 and the 2 tickets linked to it, ITS-1790 and ITS-1842. • Join Northstar-Office, not Northstar-Guest. • Remove the printer in System Settings. • Add it again by IP, not the Bonjour name. • Print a test page. 6 steps in all. Catch: ITS-1873 only covers the 2nd floor printer at 10.0.4.30. ITS-1842 shows the 3rd floor printer is 10.0.4.31, so the guide lists both. Say when it's good to publish.

Ben 4:12 PM

@Maito looks right. Publish it.

Maito APP 4:13 PM

Published. I added it to the Printing index. The 3 tickets are still open. Want me to reply on them with the link and close them?

What it won't do

It can only write what the tickets contain, so a guide from a thin ticket stays thin. IT should test the steps before publishing.
