How do you answer data questions in Slack?

To answer data questions in Slack, mention Maito with the question in plain words. It writes the query, runs it on BigQuery or Supabase, replies with the number, notes anything that skews it, such as test accounts or a spike from one source, and attaches the query so your team can check it.

How it's done today

Questions wait in the data team's queue.

What Maito does

  1. Read the question
  2. Write and run the query
  3. Answer with the number and a chart

Nina 11:02 AM

@Maito How many teams signed up last month from Germany?

Maito APP 11:03 AM

142 teams signed up from Germany in September, up 18% from 120 in August. That excludes 9 internal test teams. The catch: 27 of the 142 share one email domain (initech-training.example) and signed up on Sept 17 within 40 minutes. It looks like one class or event. Without them it is 115, which is down 4% from August. From BigQuery: the signups table, teams created Sept 1 to 30, country = DE. Chart and query attached: germany-signups.png, germany-signups.sql.

Nina 11:06 AM

@Maito And Austria and Switzerland?

Maito APP 11:07 AM

Austria 38 (up 12%), Switzerland 41 (down 5%). Neither has a cluster like that. Same query with the country changed.

How to set it up

When you ask Answer data questions in Slack
Set up

Nothing to set up. Ask in Slack or by email whenever you need it.

Connect database
  • BigQuery
  • Supabase

Not connected yet? Your agent sends you a link to sign in.

What it won't do

It can only answer from tables it can read, and a wrong definition produces a wrong number. When a term is ambiguous, it asks which one you mean.
