How do you chart a metric over time?

To chart a metric over time, mention Maito with the metric and date range. It queries BigQuery or Supabase, builds the chart, explains the main changes such as a dip or a jump, and attaches the image and the data behind it. Checking for tracking changes keeps the line honest.

Example

data
Nina 4:15 PM

@Maito Chart weekly active users for the last 6 months.

Maito APP 4:18 PM

Weekly active users, Apr 20 to Oct 12: 3,410 to 4,870, up 43%. • Steady growth of about 2% a week through July • Dip of 11% in the week of Jul 6 (US holiday week) • Flat through August • Jump of 9% the week of Sep 7 The catch: the app event for a session was renamed on Jun 1 (session_start became app_open). A query on the new name alone shows a false 31% crash in that week. I counted both names so the line is continuous. From the BigQuery events table. Attached: wau-6-months.png, 16:9 and ready for a slide.

Nina 4:20 PM

@Maito Do a version excluding internal users.

Maito APP 4:22 PM

Attached: wau-6-months-external.png. Internal users are 1.4% of the total, so the shape is the same: 3,360 to 4,800, up 43%.

How to set it up

When you ask Chart a metric
Set up

Nothing to set up. Ask in Slack or by email whenever you need it.

Connect database

What it won't do

It charts what the data holds. If an event was tracked differently over time, it tells you what it did, but you should check that it matches your definition.
